MU Softball Opens Season Against St. Andrews

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team opened its 2018 season with a pair of losses against St. Andrews at Price Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Knights earned a 5-0 victory in game one before completing the sweep with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
 
In game two, the Monarchs (0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second frame. Jordyn Propst singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Bailey Helms laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Ashley Benge, who was running for Propst, to second. Ellie Gale his a ground ball to the second baseman who misplayed the ball, which allowed Benges to score from second, 1-0.
 
The Knights (2-4) tied the game in the following half inning after Cassie Fortner singled with one out and came around to score on a throwing error, 1-1.
 
MU scored again in the home half of the inning as Reagan Parks led off the frame with a walk and scored on a single by Propst, 2-1.
 
The Monarchs held the lead until the seventh inning. With runners on first and second, Fortner singled down the left field line to score one before Lexi Dawson hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give SAU a 3-2 advantage.
 
Aly Thomas (0-1) received the loss after allowing two runs in 1.0 inning. Nancy Amos (1-0) tossed a complete game and yielded two runs with eight strikeouts.
 
Propst was 2 for 3 with an RBI as the Monarchs totaled five hits.
 
In the first game of the day, St. Andrews tallied three runs in the first inning on one hit and took advantage of a fielding error to jump ahead 3-0. The Knights added another run in the second and seventh innings to get a 5-0 win.
 
Searria Fisher (0-1) was strapped with the loss after scattering three hits and allowing four runs (1 ER) with five strikeouts and four walks in 4.0 innings in the circle. Thomas and Randi Jacobs combined for 3.0 innings allowing just one run on three hits.
 
The Monarchs were held to three hits, including one from Parks who also drew two walks.
 
Methodist returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 11, with a doubleheader at Lynchburg. First pitch scheduled for 12:30 pm.
