Softball Splits Two in Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Methodist softball team split a pair of games in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday evening.
 
The Monachs began the day falling to Mount Aloysius, 5-4, before claiming an 8-1 win against SUNY Poly to finish the trip.
 
Against SUNY Poly, MU plated three runs in the first inning to assume an early 3-0 lead. Searria Fisher led off the frame with a single before moving to third on a single by Carleigh Haywood. Chloe Hespeler followed with an RBI single to left to score Fisher, 1-0. Aly Thomas and Kelsey Smith hit back-to-back RBI singles to plate two more runs, 3-0. Savannah Dunn started off the fourth with a walk and moved to second on a groundout before eventually scoring on a two-out RBI single by Hespeler as the Monarchs extended their lead to 4-0.
 
The Wildcats recorded three hits, including two doubles, in the top of the fifth inning to bring in their first run of the game and cutting the lead down to 4-1. In the home half of the inning, Morgan Faircloth and Parks each reached base and came across to score on a three-run home run by Fisher after an RBI by Savannah Dunn to bring the lead to 8-1.
 
Miranda McKoy (2-0) tossed 5.0 innings in the circle, yielding just one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Fisher finished the game with 2.0 scoreless innings of work. Celine Laracuente (0-2) was strapped with the loss after scattering 12 hits and giving up eight runs (4 ER) with three walks and four strikeouts In 4.2 innings. Kylie Chesebro finished the game in the circle with 1.1 innings and walked two.
 
Fisher was 3 for 4 with three RBI, two runs scored and a home run, while Haywood, Smith and Hespeler each had multi-hit performances.
 
In the game against Mount Aloysius, took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on two hits and taking advantage of a fielding error. The Monarchs got one run back in the fourth as Smith reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on an error, 2-1.
 
The Mounties added two more runs in the home half of the fourth, including one on an RBI triple by Courtney Link. MU used a pair of miscues by MTA to tie the contest in the sixth, plating three runs on three hits. The game came down to the bottom of the seventh inning as the Mounties put a runner on first with one out who eventually found her way to third and scored on a fielding error to end the game, 5-4.
 
Jordyn Propst started and pitched 4.0 innings and yielded four runs (2 ER) on six hits with three strikeouts. Fisher (0-9) was saddled with the loss after giving up one run on one hit with three strikeouts.
 
Nina Shatzer (2-0) tossed a complete game and scattered eight hits, surrendered four runs (0 ER), walked four and struck out one batter in the win.
 
Hespeler was 2 for 4 at the dish, while Thomas registered an RBI. Smith went 2 for 3 and scored two runs.
 
Methodist returns to action in a USA South doubleheader at N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday, March 10, beginning at 1 pm.
