ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Methodist women's tennis team fell to N.C. Wesleyan, 5-3, in the USA South Women's Tennis Tournament Championship match at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the campus of Georgia Tech on Sunday evening.
The Monarchs fell to 19-6 on the season with two of their loses coming from the Battling Bishops. The two sides faced off twice during the regular season with each team picking up a 5-4 decision. For the Bishops, this marks their second league tournament crown in program history and clinch an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
In doubles play,
Davi Barbour and
Taylor Jackson defeated Stephany Barbera and Talitha Rowan, 8-1, at the second spot, while
Jenna Landis adn
Han Le earned an 8-4 decision against Florencia Sorrentino and Louise Hovhammer at the top flight. Giulia Zanetti and Nicole Halabi picked up an 8-4 win against Ahston Walker and
Audrey Greeson at the third and final doubles position as the Monarchs headed to singles play with a 2-1 advantage.
The Bishops tied the contest with a 7-6, 6-1 win at the sixth singles spot as Hovhamer defeated Le. NCWC took its first lead of the match as Zanetti defeated Barbour, 6-4, 6-1 at the second slot, while Barbera moved past
Allison Himes 6-3, 6-2, Walker got the Monarchs back in it with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Sorrentino at No. 1 sinlges, but Rowan dropped
Laura Brown, 7-5, 6-0 at fourth position to clinch the league title. Landis was leading 6-4, 4-3 against Halabi at the third singles flight but was stopped due to N.C. Wesleyan reaching the five win mark.
For their efforts in the tournament,
Jenna Landis and
Ashton Walker were each named to the all-tournament team, while Giulia Zanetti was named the tournament MVP as she was undefeated in singles and doubles during the weekend.
Methodist will await a possible at-large bid as the NCAA selection shows take place within the next few weeks
