Swasey, Santos net goals in loss to Shaw

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  It was a tightly contested, physical match that saw both teams rack up five yellow cards combined. It was the Shaw Bears who prevailed in this back-and-forth affair with a goal in the second period of overtime to win the game 3-2 in this non-conference women's soccer matchup against Methodist University in the Monarch SoccerPlex.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Shaw def. Methodist, 3-2 OT2
Records: Methodist 2-2 overall, Shaw 2-0 overall
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex in Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears registered the first shot on goal but Monarch goalkeeper Maggie Hunt was there for the save. It was the Monarchs who scored first, with a goal by Angelica Santos, set up by an assist from Bella Nunu in the 19th minute.
  • In the first half, Methodist outshot the Bears 5-3 with Shaw's goalkeeper Caylie Hartman coming up with two saves.
  • Despite just those three shots, the Bears managed to tie the game in the 33rd minute with a breakaway goal by Jasa Curry which she was able to sneak past a charging Hunt.
  • Methodist survived a flurry of Shaw shots in the second half, as the Bears put up 11 of them. Shaw broke through with a go-ahead goal, from Samantha Stiglmair, when she capitalized on a corner kick from MKenzie Safford and put the ball into the top, right corner to take the lead in the 69th.
  • With less than six minutes left in the game and the Monarchs trailing, Aiden Sherry was fouled inside the box to draw a penalty kick and a chance to tie the game. Sierra Swasey nailed the penalty shot into the left side to knot the score at 2-2 and eventually send the contest into overtime.
  • In the 15 minutes plus of overtime, both teams each only registered two shot. The second shot was the one that counted for the Bears, however, as Leslie Mendoza received a cross from Stiglmair and tapped the ball in for a goal and the win.
  • In this very physical matchup, there were a combined 28 fouls. Shaw had 17 fouls called against it with 12 coming in the second half. Three Methodist players earned yellow cards and even Shaw's head coach picked up a yellow.

BEYOND THE STATS
  • This was the first ever matchup for these two soccer programs. Last year was Shaw's inaugural season playing soccer after existing as a club program before elevating to varsity status.
  • Swasey scored her second goal of this young season. She had only one goal scored in 16 starts last season as a defender.
  • Santos earned her first start of the season and responded with her first goal of the season.
  • Hunt totaled five saves in the 105 minutes she was in goal.

BEARS LOOK
  • Stiglmair scored her third goal in two games this season. She also picked up an assist.
  • Curry put pressure on the back line of the defense for the Monarchs all throughout the second half. She had a game-high six shots, five of which came in the second half. She had a nice look for a second goal of the game when her shot just missed the post and stayed in play.
  • After going 4-10-1 last season, the Bears are now 2-0 through their first two games.
  • They have scored six goals through their first two goals after getting shut out three consecutive times to start last season.

UP NEXT
