Alexander’s Game-High 16 Points Not Enough Against Greensboro

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Tyzarea Alexander led all scorers with 16 points but the Monarchs still fell to visiting Greensboro College, 67-56, Sunday afternoon in USA South Athletic Conference women's basketball play.

It was a tale of two halves as The Pride used a good shooting performance in the first half to take a 34-22 lead into intermission. Greensboro College shot over 46 percent from the field and made five shots from behind the arc to hold the edge over Methodist in the first two quarters.

In the second half, it was the Monarchs' turn to have the hot shooting hand as they shot nearly 47 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc, making six long-range treys. Meanwhile, The Pride were held to 33 percent shooting in the final two frames.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs got hot from three-point land in the third quarter and as a result they were able to cut the deficit from 36-22 to 38-28 after consecutive threes by Katlin Kendrick and Kaneya Chambers. However, Makayla Williams answered with a three of her own for The Pride. Later, Williams earned a steal and found Sabria Joseph for a basket and a relatively comfortable 15-point lead.
  • Early in the fourth quarter, two straight smooth midrange jumpers by Kodi Centry made it a ten-point game again at 51-41. This time, it was A'Liyah Woods who responded with the made shot behind the arc.
  • Late in the fourth quarter, Kadie Snipes made consecutive threes for a mini 6-0 Methodist run and Alexander scored the last seven Monarch points, including a long-range bomb for the final score of 67-56.
  • The Pride set the tone for the rest of the game, by opening with an 8-0 run to start.
  • In the second quarter, Greensboro shot four-of-seven from behind the arc to lead by as many 15 points in the first half. Joseph opened the quarter with a trey-ball. After Chandler True's three made it a seven-point, 19-12 game, The Pride's Woods went right back down the court and found Joseph for a second three.
  • Two other times in the second quarter, the Monarchs were able to cut the deficit back under ten points. Each time, on the next Greensboro possession, Lauren Whitley countered with triples.
