Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Alexander posts career high in loss at Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, N.C.  Methodist hit the road to begin the new year and re-enter USA South Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, but the Monarchs suffered through a cold spell in the final quarter that allowed host Pfeiffer University to cruise to the finish in a 67-49 women's basketball victory.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 67-49
Records: Methodist 2-9, 1-3 (USA South), Pfeiffer (4-2 (2-1)
Location: Merner Gym, Misenheimer, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist traded the lead with the Falcons through the opening minutes of the first quarter before ending the frame on the upswing, toting an 11-10 lead into the second quarter.
  • Pfeiffer opened strongly in that second stanza, breaking away with a four-minute, 9-2 run that elevated the home team to a 19-13 lead. Kodi Centry got Methodist back on track with a layup followed by a defensive rebound that turned into a 3-pointer from Kadie Snipes.
  • The Falcons halted Methodist's mini-run with a bucket of their own, but Tyzarea Alexander's jumper just outside the right block, off a dish from a driving Chandler True, rallied the Monarchs to within a point, at 21-20. However, that would be the narrowest of deficits the rest of the way, though Methodist kept within two to four points across much of the third quarter.
  • Pfeiffer began to pull away late in that third frame, then held Methodist without a point for nearly five minutes in the fourth quarter, pushing a 49-39 advantage to 60-39 lead before Alexander ended the run with a pair of converted free-throw opportunities.

STAT PACK
  • Alexander and Centry pushed into double figures in scoring for Methodist, putting 14 and 13 points, respectively, into the scorebook. Alexander's output was a career high.
  • Centry and True, with five rebounds apiece, led the Monarchs in rebounding during the loss.
  • Twenty-three turnovers by Methodist were converted into 24 Pfeiffer points, but much of that damage came in the first half when the Monarchs let loose of 14 possessions.
  • The miscues by Methodist were toned down in the second half, while the Monarchs' defense forced an uptick in Falcons turnovers. Despite forcing 14 in the second half, Methodist was not able to capitalize on those opportunities, scoring only eight points off the Falcons' 21 turnovers across the game's 40 minutes.
  • The rebounding edge went Pfeiffer's way as it ended the contest with a 44-32 edge off the glass. 14 different Falcons came down with at least one rebound, led by Ja'Mia Johnson's six.
  • Brina Bently scored 20 for Pfeiffer to lead all scorers while A'Mya McClain chimed in with 14 to also reach double digits.

NEXT UP
  • Methodist steps out of USA South play for its next game, Saturday at home in the Riddle Center, with a 2 p.m. non-league game against The Apprentice School.
  • Pfeiffer steps back onto its home court Thursday against visiting Berea College for a 2 p.m. conference match-up.
