FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist outscored host Mary Baldwin University in the second half of Saturday's USA South Athletic Conference women's basketball outing, but the visiting Monarchs were unable to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit in falling to the Fighting Squirrels, 69-56.
Though
Logan Lee fell a few points shy of her single-game career high, her 16 points at MBU came from a hot afternoon for the freshman who hit on 8-of-12 from the floor (67 percent).
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Mary Baldwin def. Methodist, 69-56
Records: Methodist 4-16 (2-10 USA South), Mary Baldwin 14-8 (8-5)
Location: Physical Activities Center, Mary Baldwin University; Staunton, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist battled with the Fighting Squirrels during the opening 10-minute quarter, exchanging the lead six times with the home team while playing at all-square on three different occasions.
- Lee led the Monarchs with eight points in that opening frame, but she had a lot of help in keeping Methodist close, 22-18, by the end of the period. Four teammates hit the stat sheet with buckets, including lead-changing 3-pointers from both Chandler True and Kadie Snipes.
- A 13-4 run by Mary Baldwin to open the second quarter changed the tone of the game, however. By the time the teams head into the halftime locker rooms the Squirrels had finished off a 22-6 period for a 44-24 lead over the Monarchs.
- Methodist whittled the deficit down to 13 (48-35) midway through the third but could not use the momentum there to edge closer over the remainder of the game, eventually ending the afternoon at the same 13-point deficit.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Snipes joined Lee in double-digits for Methodist, knocking down 10 points that included a pair of treys and a 2-for-2 afternoon at the charity stripe.
- Lee and Snipes accounted for nearly half of the Monarchs' points on the afternoon as no other player scored more than True's seven points.
- Methodist had a solid night off the rim, pulling down 38 rebounds to Mary Baldwin's 34. Kaneya Chambers tied for game-high honors with seven boards while Tyzarea Alexander added five of her own. In all, 11 Monarchs collected at least one rebound during the contest.
- A big part of Mary Baldwin's game was the 3-point shot. The Fighting Squirrels hit 11 of their 26 attempts from long range, with Brooke Anders pouring in six of her nine attempts on the way to her game-leading 22-point afternoon.
- In contrast, Methodist hit just 4-of-15 from behind the arc.
- The Squirrels lived off an efficient first half, shooting 50 percent (16-32) from the floor and 50 percent (6-12) from 3-point land. Methodist wasn't far behind at 44 percent (11-25) but couldn't match the results from long range.
