Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ja'Shawn Steward-Johnson

2nd-Half Goals Lead Monarchs to Victory

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist women's soccer dominated, especially in the second half, and defeated visiting William Peace University, 2-0, in USA South Athletic Conference action Saturday evening in the Monarchs' annual Play 4Kay game.

Methodist out shot the Pacers 31-6 in the game, including a 20-shot differential (23-3) in the second half. Sierra Swasey scored the first goal of the game in the 59th minute and Sallee Jones added another goal in the 84th minute for good measure.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. William Peace, 2-0
Records: Methodist 6-4-1 (3-1-1 USA South), William Peace 6-7-1 (2-2-0)
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.
Event: Play 4Kay Game, a fundraising event in support of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Swasey delivered with the eventual game-winner as Haley Bowles' corner somehow was allowed to bounce several times in the Pacers' box before Swasey footed it in for a goal.
  • Gillian Niesel's long range rocket forced the keeper to come out and save the ball despite the shot being off target. William Peace's keeper, however, did not make a clean catch and she was left grasping as Jones got to the ball first and beat the goalie for the 2-0 score.
  • The surprising element of the previously-scoreless contest, pre-Swasey score, had been how the Monarchs had not yet scored -- at least in the 15 minutes prior to the game-winner.
  • Sure, the opening 45 minutes had limited scoring chances, only 11 shots -- eight from the Monarchs -- and only three necessary saves -- two from WPU goalie Kasey Wilkins but a goal had always felt like a matter of when, not if, as Methodist spent ample amounts of time in the game in the Pacers' half of the field and the Monarchs' great passing, spacing, and stifling defense gave Methodist plenty of promising opportunities and chances.

STAT FACTS
  • After registering her first collegiate assist last game against Mary Baldwin, Jones scored her first collegiate goal in this game.
  • Laura Harris put up a team-high seven shots and Aiden Sherry was right behind her with five shots taken.
  • William Peace's Kasey Wilkins had to be attentive at all times, facing 31 shots and earning eight saves against two goals allowed.

UP NEXT
  • October 19 is Senior Night for the Monarchs as Methodist plays host to visiting Averett University in conference action at 6 p.m.
  • The Pacers will look to get back to .500 with a Tuesday road date against conference opponent Salem College at 4 p.m.
