2nd-Half Outburst in Win at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C.  Using a 20-point third quarter, visiting Methodist football routed host Greensboro College, 41-10, in USA South Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.

It was an all-around good day for the Monarchs with Brandon Bullins throwing for 196 yards and four touchdowns and Vontre Howard rushing for a season-high 158 yards and two total touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) on 21 carries. The Methodist defense forced three turnovers (including a interception returned for a touchdown) while holding the Pride to 208 yards of total offense and 1-of-14 on third and fourth down conversions.

The Monarchs set several season-best records, earning new marks in points scored (41), points allowed (10), first downs (25), rushing yards (274), third down conversion percentage (63%), and passing yards allowed (111) for the year.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final Score: Methodist def. Greensboro, 41-10
Records: Methodist 3-3 (2-2 USA South), Greensboro 1-6 (0-4)
Location: Jamieson Stadium; Greensboro, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist used a near-perfect third quarter to turn the tides in this game. The Monarch offense had nine first downs in the quarter, running for 87 yards while Bullins went 7-of-8 for 65 yards through the air. The defense helped too with a 42-yard pick-six from Taj Outten in the quarter.
  • Four plays into the third quarter, Outten jumped a slant route and took the interception to the house to give the Monarchs a 27-10 advantage. With 7:18 remaining in the third, Howard scored his second touchdown of the day with a 25-yard run. In the next offensive possession, Bullins completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Jamaar Moore.
  • Through six games, the Monarchs have scored on its opening drive (three touchdowns and a field goal) four times. This game was no different as Bullins found Kobe Praylow for a 16-yard touchdown for the early 6-0 lead.
  • The Pride's lone touchdown was one of the most peculiar scores you might ever see as Greensboro recovered a surprise Methodist onside kick and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown to take a 7-6 lead in the first quarter.
  • Bullins connected with Howard for a 14-yard touchdown to retake the lead, 13-7, immediately following the Pride's touchdown. Moore's 43-yard reception and Howard's 19-yard rush in the drive set up the touchdown.
  • Minus a fourth-and-goal stuff at the one-yard line, the Monarchs were excellent in the game's opening 15 minutes. Methodist had 188 yards of offense and 10 first downs in the first quarter. Defensively, the Monarchs' Tyquan Eaddy forced a fumble on a kickoff and Brian Stone earned the recovery to give Methodist an extra possession.
  • The defense also held its ground in the second quarter. Twice in the second quarter, the Pride turned the ball over on downs while on the Monarchs' side of the field. Nate Jones earned a pass breakup on 4th-and-7 and DaQuinton Grady recovered a fumble and returned it 21 yards on another fourth down play.
  • Praylow was a big factor in extending the team's lead to 20-7. Praylow returned a punt 20 yards to the Pride's 22-yard line and then caught three passes in the Monarchs' drive, including a 25-yard touchdown.

STAT FACTS
  • Nick Baker added 79 yards on the ground on just 14 carries.
  • Praylow's seven receptions, 86 receiving yards, and two touchdowns were all game-highs. Moore had five catches for 62 yards and a touchdown, all good for second on the day.
  • Roderic Christian Jr. led the team with eight tackles (four solo stops) and 1.5 tackles for a loss.
  • The Methodist defense was even tougher in the second half, holding Greensboro to 73 yards of total offense through the final two quarters.
  • An area of concern for the Monarchs were the 18 penalties that resulted in 180 penalty yards.

UP NEXT
  • November 2 is Homecoming for Methodist as the Monarchs welcome N.C. Wesleyan to Monarch Stadium. The conference matchup is slated for 1 p.m.
  • Greensboro continues its hunt for its first conference win with a 1 p.m. home date November 2 against Huntingdon College.
