WINCHESTER, VA. Garren Dearman scored a career-high 24 points and Methodist men's basketball won its third consecutive game, defeating host Shenandoah University, 82-76, Friday evening on the first day of the Hornets' annual Shenandoah Shootout.
In addition to Dearman's career-high,
Calvin Manley notched personal marks of his own in Division III action. Manley scored 17 points on a perfect seven-of-seven shooting, with seven rebounds, and three blocks -- all career highs for him.
The Monarchs will be back in action Saturday afternoon in the championship of the Shootout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- At the 16-minute mark, Sam Mingledoff connected on a three to give Methodist a 7-5 lead and the Monarchs never relinquished their hold after that point. Methodist ended the first half on a 8-0 run to take a 42-32 advantage into intermission.
- The Monarchs shot a blazing 18-of-32 (56 percent) on field goals in the first period. The Monarchs went a ridiculous 14-of-18 (78 percent) on two-pointers in the half.
- A three-pointer from Dearman gave Methodist a 65-50 edge halfway through the second period. The 15-point advantage was the Monarchs' largest lead of the game.
- The Hornets did not go away quietly, using a late 9-1 run to make it a one-possession game with 40 seconds remaining. Chris Oates punctuated the run with a three to make it a 77-74 game.
- The win was cemented by Methodist when Kevin McLaughlin Jr. made five-of-six free throws in the final 39 seconds while Oates failed to connect from deep twice in that same time span.
STAT FACTS
- Methodist topped Shenandoah 28-20 in points off turnovers and 23-11 in fastbreak points while the Hornets owned a noticeable 20-10 advantage in second chance points and a 20-11 edge in bench points.
- Dearman shot 10-of-19 from the field and three-of-eight from deep.
- Mingledoff finished the game with 14 points on five-of-nine shooting with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
- Malik Edwards had eight points, three steals, two rebounds, and two assists as the sixth man.
- Christopher Chaney led the Hornets with 25 points and 12 rebounds. However, he was forced to work for his numbers, taking 22 shots to reach 25 points.
UP NEXT
The Monarchs have a chance to be crowned champions of the 2019 Shenandoah Shootout if they can manage a victory Saturday. Their opponent (Penn State-Altoona or Southern Virginia) is to be determined by a late game on Friday, but the championship will tip off at 3 p.m., December 28.
