FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist softball hoped to get on the winning track when cold-weather Messiah (Pa.) College came to visit Price Field Friday afternoon, but the visiting Falcons' bats heated up nicely in their season-opening series as they swept the Monarchs, 11-1 and 11-3.
Bethany Junker and
Bri Caton provided most of the damage from the Methodist batter's box as the duo each collected three hits and two RBI on the day.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Messiah def. Methodist 11-1 (6 inn.), Messiah def. Methodist 11-3
Records: Methodist 0-6, Messiah 2-0
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs climbed back to cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fifth inning of Game 2. Bethany Junker's single batted in Reagan Parks for a run, and Bri Caton then drove in Junker with a single to left field.
- Earlier, in the third inning, Caton had brought in Blythe Best with a single for the Monarchs' first run of the game.
- The Monarchs are probably lamenting the six runners that were left on base in Game 2. After scoring the two runs in the fifth inning, Methodist had a chance to continue to cut the deficit and potentially tie the game with runners on second and third, but a strikeout left both runners stranded.
- Messiah then scored five runs in the sixth inning to turn a two-run lead into a 10-3 advantage thanks to a two-RBI homerun by Erin Cressman, and a two-RBI double by Isabel Seise. The Falcons added a bonus run in the seventh inning.
- Parks scored the Monarchs' only run of Game 1 off of a sacrifice fly by Junker.
- The Falcons poured on seven runs -- all unearned -- in the top of the seventh inning to force an early end to Game 1.
IN THE BOX
- Caton registered the Monarchs' only hit of Game 1.
- In addition to a run scored, Parks drew two walks in the day's opener.
- Jordan Propst, the starting pitcher of Game 1, pitched five innings, allowing only four earned runs. Brittany Jones started Game 2 and she had five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of action.
