FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. After Methodist baseball routed the visiting Hornets 14-2 in the first game of a doubleheader, Game 2 proved to be much more compelling with the Monarchs pulling away for a 4-2 victory in non-conference play Saturday evening.
It was a tale of two different games as the Monarchs scored a season-high 14 runs, including 11 in the first three innings of Game 1, but had to rally from a 2-1 deficit in the nightcap.
Tucker Criswell led the Monarchs at the plate in both games, combining for six hits, seven RBIs, two doubles and a homerun.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kachler was Game 2's hero as he scored the game-tying run on Criswell's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, and then drove in the game-winning run by drawing a walk in the seventh.
- Will Walker did not panic after giving up two straight walks with a 3-2 advantage, forcing a groundout to second for the final out. The two men stranded represented the Hornets' best chance for the win as they only left five men on base in the game.
- Jacob Austin added insurance with another run scored in the eight. It was a far journey to home plate for Austin as he walked, stole second and third, and then scored on a wild pitch.
- A booming triple by Carrson Atkins in the fifth brought Kaden Warren home and helped Lynchburg tie the score and the Hornets took a 2-1 lead when Parker Shaffer batted in Atkins.
- There was only one run scored through the first four innings with the Monarchs scoring to begin the game. Criswell's double drove in Carter after a lead-off single.
- The Monarchs made their mark in the first game early and often with a three-RBI, first-inning homerun by Criswell coming after a Kachler single and a lead-off Carter hit. By the end of the fourth inning, Methodist had already poured in 13 runs on 16 hits.
- The Hornets' Garrett Jackson spoiled Seth Beard's shutout with a RBI double in the third inning.
- Offensively, the Monarchs was most deadly in the third inning when they sent five runs across home plate to take a commanding 11-1 lead. Methodist had four hits, two walks, and a double steal.
- The last five innings of Game 1 were scoreless besides the eighth when each team scored a run. There were chances for the score to be even higher than the 16 total runs scored as Lynchburg left 13 men on base and Methodist left nine.
