Goldsmith Goes For 15 in Loss at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C.  Kayla Goldsmith was a beast on both ends of the court for the Monarchs Sunday afternoon in their 71-55 loss against host Greensboro College in USA South women's basketball action.

Goldsmith had 15 points on five-of-seven shooting, seven rebounds, two blocks, and two steals as she led Methodist in each category.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Greensboro def. Methodist, 71-55
Records: Methodist 4-19 (2-12 USA South), Greensboro 18-5 (11-3)
Location: Hanes Gymnasium; Greensboro, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sabria Joseph's trey-ball gave Greensboro a 19-point, 42-23 advantage early in the third quarter before Methodist responded with a 10-2 run.
  • That Monarchs run helped whittle the lead down to 46-37. Logan Lee followed up two made Kierra Beasley threes with layups. It was the first time that Methodist managed to cut the deficit to under ten points since the first quarter.
  • The Monarchs and the Pride swapped free throws as Greensboro took a 51-41 lead entering the final frame.
  • After going five-of-18 from behind the arc in the first three quarters, the Pride caught fire from downtown, going four-of-eight in the last period. A'Liyah Woods knocked down two treys and Joseph and Lauren Whitley each made one three-pointer to stave off any potential Methodist rally.
  • With Greensboro leading 10-8 midway through the first quarter, the Pride went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-point advantage. A made three-pointer by Kodi Centry closed the first quarter at 19-11.
  • The Pride opened the second quarter a 13-0 run that gave Greensboro its largest lead of the half, a 32-11 advantage. The run, which lasted nearly six minutes was polished off by a made trey from Ashley Free before Centry stopped the bleeding with a layup.
  • Centry's basket was the start of a Methodist run as the Monarchs responded to the Pride with a 10-0 run that cut the deficit to 32-22.

STAT FACTS
  • Centry was the only other Monarch to score in double-digits and she did so off the bench. She had 11 points on six shots and seven boards. Her three is only the second shot she's made behind the arc this season. She's two-of-three for the year.
  • The six points and five boards by Beasley marked career-highs for the first-year player.
  • With Beasley and Centry being reserves along with Tyzarea Alexander (six points, three rebounds, and two assists), the Monarchs' bench unit outscored Greensboro's 23-22.
  • Logan Lee had eight points and Kaneya Chambers had seven as both players logged four rebounds each.
  • In the two meetings, Methodist was able to hold a team that topped 80 points in ten games this season to 71 and 67. With the Pride limited to under 34 percent, today ranks as Greensboro's fifth-worst offensive performance.

THE PRIDE LOOK
  • Woods secured a double-double with 20 points and 11 boards.
  • Katie Lewis had a trio of threes to give her a total of 11 points to go with six rebounds and three steals. Joseph hit two threes and had ten points, three boards, and three steals.
  • Lauren Jenkins led the bench unit with nine points and six boards.
  • Despite shooting a worse percentage from the field than Methodist (33.8% to 34.8%), the Pride used their 16 steals to generate extra possessions and offense, which resulted in 28 points off turnovers.

UP NEXT
  • The Monarchs close out the regular season at home with a 7 p.m. Wednesday game against Salem and a 2 p.m. Saturday game against William Peace.
  • Greensboro plays Pfeiffer Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Misenheimer, N.C.
