Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ja'Shawn Steward-Johnson

Thriller on Sr. Day, Play 4Kay Game

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Monarchs, in their final game of the season, lost a heartbreaker at the Riddle Center as the game went to the final possession with William Peace coming out ahead, 65-61 in USA South Athletic Conference women's basketball action.

The game featured four lead changes and three tie scores, with five of seven of those knots occurring in the final quarter. The Monarchs led by as many as 11 points early in that fourth frame and led for nearly 17 minutes of the second half.

Methodist nearly pulled off the upset behind an outstanding game from Kayla Goldsmith, but Kadie Snipes' game-tying three-pointer was blocked with three seconds remaining, leading to a pair of Pacers free throws that iced the visitors' victory.

Goldsmith had a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds, as well as four blocks, all team highs.

Records: Methodist 5-20 (3-13 USA South), William Peace 15-9 (11-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With seven minutes left to play, Kodi Centry's layup gave the Monarchs their largest lead of the day, a 53-42 advantage. The Pacers responded with a game-tying 13-2 run.
  • Lanesha Hawkins gave the Pacers their first lead since early in the second quarter with a made free throw for a 56-55 advantage. A minute later, Logan Lee hit a trey-ball to shift the lead back to Methodist, 58-56.
  • After Khadijah Daniels tied the game at 58, a Pacers' free throw and layup gave William Peace a 61-58 advantage with 54 seconds remaining in the game.
  • Down 62-59, the Monarchs settled for two points when Centry converted a layup with eight seconds left after a missed Lee jumpshot. Daniels made both of her free throws after getting intentionally fouled and Manazia Merriett earned the block on Snipes' shot that would have forced overtime.
  • After the Pacers jumped out to an 11-point, 22-11 advantage early in the second frame, the Monarchs took command of the game with a masterful second quarter performance. Methodist outscored William Peace, 23-8, including an incredible 19-0 that lasted seven minutes. During that time, the Pacers were held to 0-7 from the field while committing seven turnovers.
  • After Kaneya Chambers' free throws tied the game at 23, the crowd erupted when Kadie Snipes hit a go-ahead three-pointer. The energy was downright electric when Snipes followed up her three-pointer with another long-range trey on the very next possession.
  • Methodist took a 34-26 first half lead by capitalizing off of William Peace's miscues. The Monarchs turned 12 first-half turnovers into 20 points, while limiting the Pacers to five points off six Methodist turnovers.
  • In the third quarter, the two teams played to a 15-15 draw.
