Scots Take Opener over Monarchs, Nightcap delayed

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Monarchs dropped the front end of a softball doubleheader against visiting Maryville (Tenn.) College, 12-2, in five innings Friday afternoon. Methodist was trailing 9-2 in the top of the fifth inning in the nightcap before a rain delay foiled the finish.

The second game was postponed until Saturday, tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m.

Despite registering only one hit in Game 1, the Monarchs mitigated that by drawing eight walks, which tied for their season-high. That was no match, however, for the 14 Maryville base hits.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Maryville def. Methodist, 12-2 (5)
Records: Methodist 6-11, Maryville 7-4
Location: Don Price Field; Fayetteville, N.C.
Note: Game 2 of the doubleheader was postponed until Saturday at 7 p.m. due to a rain delay.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite the lopsided Game 1 score, the decisive moment, or at least what helped shift momentum entirely in the Scots' favor can be traced to the first two innings of the game.
  • At the bottom of the first inning, Methodist had already scored two runs off of walks and was primed to tack on several runs. The Monarchs had the bases loaded with only one out but failed to add any additional runs.
  • Next, in the top of the second, the Scots also scored two runs off of walks and had their very own one-out bases loaded situation. Maryville added another four runs to take a 7-2 lead before the third out with the help of a bases-clearing triple from Christen Torres and a sacrifice fly.
  • The Scots scored another five runs in the final three innings for the five-inning victory in the first game.
  • Similar to the first game, the Monarchs held a slim 2-1 advantage entering the top of the second inning in the nightcap. Maryville retook the lead in the third after the Scots' first six batters reached base en route to four runs and a 5-2 score.
  • Before the game was postponed in the top of the fifth, Maryville had tallied another four runs in the inning and had runners on second and third with two outs.

STAT FACTS
  • Samantha Jacobs registered the only hit and Jacobs and Blythe Best scored the team's only two runs.
  • Best and Taylor Jacobs drew two walks each. Bri Caton and Lindsey Champion earned the two RBIs in the game by drawing walks.
  • The Scots' Katlyn Smith pitched a complete game of five innings, while allowing only one hit and one earned run with ten strikeouts.
  • Amaya Goodloe paced Maryville with three hits in three at-bats and she scored twice.

UP NEXT
  • The Monarchs are back home tomorrow for a doubleheader against Berea College at 12 and 2 p.m.
  • The Scots take to the road again with a doubleheader tomorrow against N.C. Wesleyan at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
