Softball Takes Opener in Split at Brevard

BREVARD, N.C.  Methodist softball won its fourth consecutive game with a 5-2 USA South Athletic Conference victory over host Brevard College before dropping the second end of the doubleheader, 5-1, Saturday afternoon.

The Monarchs won their fourth straight game under the tenet of great pitching, as the duo of Brittany Jones and Jordyn Propst was dynamite in Game 1. Jones gave up five hits without surrendering any earned runs in four innings for the win, and Propst pitched three innings of scoreless softball while allowing only one hit to earn a save.

THE ESSENTIALS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brevard took the lead in Game 1 with a two-RBI single from Olivia Presley for a 2-1 advantage in the second inning.
  • Methodist retook the lead right back in the third off of a Junker triple. Junker scored Samantha Jacobs and then scored herself after an error on the Tornados' third baseman. The Monarchs added another run in the third off of a Ashley Benge sacrifice fly to take a 4-2 lead.
  • The Monarchs added one more run in the fifth for a final score of 5-2 as the Tornados were held scoreless except for the second inning.
  • In the second game, it was the Tornados' pitching that earned Brevard the victory as Micayla McCoy pitched a complete game, giving up only one earned run and five hits.
  • The Monarchs' lone run in the nightcap came from Heidi Foreman scoring off of Jacobs' double.
  • Game 2 was scoreless for the first four and a half innings until Mari Cook's two-RBI single.

  • Kelsey Smith had two hits in the first game, as well as a sacrifice hit.
