WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Methodist stepped up a division to play NCAA Division II Winston-Salem State Saturday in a women's tennis showdown, but the division didn't matter to the visiting Monarchs who rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Rams.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Winston-Salem St., 7-0
Records: Methodist 2-3, Winston-Salem St. 0-2
Location: Winston-Salem, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Playing the D-II format, in which the three doubles matches are contested for a solitary point, Methodist earned that available point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2.
- The Rams picked up a victory at 3-doubles, but Ashton Walker and Abby Caddick teamed up for a 6-1 win in the No. 1 slot, and then Casey Carroll and Sydni Lewis fought for a 6-4 win at No. 2 to close out the doubles competition.
- In singles play it was all Methodist, as each of the six Monarchs on the courts beat back the advances of their Rams opponents.
- Jessica Tucker picked up the first victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win at 6-singles, followed by Taylor Jackson's 2 and 1 win at No. 4.
- The match-clinching point came from the 1-singles court where Walker rolled past China Brown, 1 and 1, for the fourth Methodist point.
- The momentum continued throughout the remaining bouts as Allison Himes, Jill Lawrence and Caddick were all victorious in straight-set wins.
