Run-rule Game 2 gives Monarchs split at MBU

STAUNTON, Va.  Monarch softball completed a five-inning, 9-0, shutout against host Mary Baldwin University in the second game of a USA South Athletic Conference doubleheader, avenging an earlier 15-7 defeat in six innings in Game 1, Saturday afternoon.

For Methodist, the 16 runs combined in the twin bill is tied for the most the Monarchs have scored in a doubleheader this season. The Monarch offense combined to tally 22 hits and five extra base hits, including three homeruns. Bethany Junker led at the plate with two hits and a .500 batting average in each game while Jordyn Propst launched a two-RBI homer in each game.

The difference was pitching and in Game 2, Cameron Liso pitched the shutout and earned the first win of her collegiate career. She allowed only three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Homerun. Homerun. Homerun. Homerun. Homerun. No, that is not a copy-and-paste typo and yes, you should have read "homerun" five times because that is how the first game of the doubleheader started. Mary Baldwin belted three homeruns through the first four innings and Methodist countered with two of its own. Each of the five homers were two-RBI bombs.
  • In Game 2, when Propst homered for a 2-0 lead in the second inning, you would have thought you were watching a repeat. However, the hits never came Mary Baldwin.
  • Junker hit a two-RBI double in the top of third and the Monarchs tacked on three more scores in the inning for a 7-0 advantage.
  • In the fifth, a Mary Baldwin fielding error allowed Blythe Best to reach and Savannah Dunn and Alex Fleck to score for the nine run mercy to come into effect.
  • In Game 1, once the balls came back down to Earth, the Squirrels led 6-4 and finished the fourth inning by adding two more scores. Ashley Benge cut the deficit to 8-7 in the top of the fifth with a two-RBI single but Mary Baldwin ignited for seven runs off of eight hits in the bottom of the fifth and six innings to end the game with a mercy ruling.

STAT FACTS
  • Along with Propst, Samantha Jacobs hit a homerun.
  • In the first game, Best led with a team-high three hits while Jacobs, Junker, and Kelsey Smith each had two hits.
  • In Game 2, Propst and Junker led the team with two hits and two RBIs.
  • After logging 17 hits in Game 1, Mary Baldwin was held to only three hits total in the next game.
  • Three different Fighting Squirrels had three hits in the first game with starting pitcher Courteney Back leading the charge at the plate with two homeruns and four RBIs, and three runs scored herself.
