Quakers Rumble Past Softball

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  After three reschedules, Methodist softball was finally able to square off against Guilford College in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon. The Quakers walked away with a five-inning, 14-0 victory in Game 1 and a five-inning, 21-2 win in the nightcap.

Originally scheduled for February 20th, this doubleheader concludes the Monarchs' non-conference slate this season with just USA South Athletic Conference matchups on the horizon.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Guilford def. Methodist, 14-0 (5); Guilford def. Methodist, 21-2 (5)
Records: Methodist 8-20; Guilford 16-3
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In Game 1, Katy Holt doubled to give the Quakers their first run and Makayla Carver followed up Holt with a three-RBI double en route to a six-run second inning.
  • Over the next three innings, Guilford poured in eight more runs for the run-rule win, including a five-run fifth inning, thanks in large part to a three-RBI inside-the-park homerun from Natalie Conrad.
  • Methodist was finally able to put runs across the board in the fourth inning of Game 2. Pinch-hitter Ashlee Greene singled to score Taylor Jacobs, and Samantha Jacobs singled to score Taylor Jacobs.
  • In the first game, the Monarchs' best chance to score came in the fourth inning but ended with Bethany Junker stranded at third and Kelsey Smith at first.
  • In the nightcap, the Quakers pressed on the gas pedal from the start and never let off from a three-run first inning to nine runs scored in the fourth.

STAT FACTS
  • Smith accounted for two of the Monarchs' three hits in the first game and Junker had a hit in each game.
  • Samantha Jacobs led with two hits in the nightcap. Blythe Best and Hannah Key also registered a hit in the second game.
  • The Quakers were led by Holt in the first game with three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored herself. She combined for five hits and five RBIs on the day. In Game 2, it was Anna Wolfe's bat that led the offense with three hits, five RBIs, and three runs scored.
  • In an overall not-so-good day, the Monarchs' combined seven errors did not help matters.
