1st-half Flurry Leads Bobcats Past Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Monarchs suffered a non-conference defeat to visiting Division II West Virginia Wesleyan, 22-9, behind a flurry of first-half goals from the Bobcats in women's lacrosse action Friday afternoon.

West Virginia Wesleyan scored 16 goals in the first half, too large of a deficit from which Methodist could climb.

Kaelyn Holland led the Monarchs' attack with four goals and an assist. Monti Hendrix had 16 draw-control wins, one shy of tying the program's single game record she had set last season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early in the first half, the Monarchs actually had a 3-2 lead following goals from Holland and Lindsay Brennan but the Bobcats scored 11 unanswered goals in the first half.
  • Hendrix finally stopped the West Virginia Wesleyan run with a goal but the Bobcats knocked in three more scores before intermission for a 16-4 halftime score.
  • Methodist actually had a promising start to the game, the Monarchs needed only seven seconds to score. Hendrix won the draw control and seven seconds later, Bonner scored.
  • The second half was more reserved as the Bobcats scored six times and Methodist five. Brennan opened the half with a score and Holland scored three consecutive goals for the Monarchs as they cut the deficit to 18-8.
  • West Virginia Wesleyan scored four of the last five goals to end the game with a final score of 22-9.

STAT FACTS
  • Holland's stat sheet goes beyond scoring. Holland caused a team-high three turnovers, picked up three ground balls, and took a team-high seven shots to go with her five points.
  • Brennan had three points with two goals and an assist while Hendrix and Lily Eisenhart each had a goal and an assist.
  • In addition to her six saves, Mary Ellen Kelliher also had a team-high six ground balls.
  • Madison Duvall (six goals and two assists) and Lindsay Penwell (five goals and three assists) led the Bobcats with eight points a piece. Four other players notched four points.
