SPOILER, SPOILER, THAT’S THE MONARCHS

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist softball officially ends the season on a two-game winning streak with a 3-2, eighth inning victory over visiting Greensboro College in USA South Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon.

Only 17 minutes was needed to reach a final decision after play resumed in the top of the eighth inning from March 30. Originally, the Pride won that game, 4-3, but a Methodist appeal granted a second go and the Monarchs made the most of it.

Methodist dealt a crushing blow to Greensboro as the Pride will be forced to go on the road for the first round of the conference tournament. A Greensboro win would have meant that they would have hosted first round. Saturday, the Monarchs played spoiler, eliminating Salem's chance at finishing as the second seed in the East Division.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. Greensboro, 4-3 (8)
Records: Methodist 11-27 (4-12 USA South), Greensboro 23-13 (9-7)
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The appeal from Methodist occurred after an improper Greensboro runner was placed on second -- the international tiebreaker rule for extra innings -- to start the eighth inning on the March 30 date. The Monarchs eventually won the appeal and on Sunday, the Pride had to begin the top of the inning with the runner on second base being ruled out.
  • Blythe Best needed only two at-bats to score after being placed on second in the bottom of the eighth. Kelsey Smith and Hannah Key delivered with the sacrifice bunts for the win.
  • Previously, the Monarchs had a 2-0 advantage in the fifth as a Junker single and a Key sacrifice fly scored two.
  • The Pride tied the game in the top of the seventh, using four hits, an error, and a walk to score two runs. Greensboro's chance to win the game in regulation ended with Sara Darling throwing the runner out at third. Two runners were left stranded.
  • Brittany Jones also ends the season on a two-game winning streak after an impressive showing of a complete game with three strikeouts and one earned run allowed.

STAT FACTS
  • Junker and Smith each finish with two hits and a RBI. Samantha Jacobs and Savannah Dunn each had a hit and a walk.
  • Key is clutch as her bunt to win the game was her only at-bat.
  • Maddy Wetherholt gets the loss despite the nice performance. She pitched 7.1 innings with five strikeouts and two earned runs allowed. Allyson Loy also willed the Pride to a win. She had three of the team's seven hits.

SEASON LEADERS
  • Samantha Jacobs led the team with a .343 batting average and a .424 slugging percentage in 99 at-bats.
  • Bethany Junker led with 35 hits while Jacobs finished with 34 hits and Best ended with 33.
  • Smith's 14 RBIs led the team.
  • 26 walks and a .442 on-base percentage was enough for Ashley Benge to finish tops on the team.
  • Jones led all pitchers with six wins and six complete games, 45 strikeouts, and an ERA of 4.36.
