DANVILLE, Va. Methodist men's tennis clinched the second seed in the East Division of the USA South Athletic Conference and a berth in the conference tournament with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over host Averett University Thursday afternoon.
Down 3-1 to the Cougars, the Monarchs reeled off four straight victories in singles play with wins at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Hayden Wilfong completed the match with his victory at 4-singles for the fifth point.
The consequences of a loss would have been that the Monarchs and the Cougars would have had the same conference record and a 1-1 head-to-head record. Instead, the Monarchs clinch and Averett could get knocked out of the next weekend's tournament altogether.
