Extra Innings Doubly Unkind

LAGRANGE, Ga.   Same day, another game, and another extra innings battle. Facing an elimination game on Day 2 of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament, Methodist baseball was upended by Huntingdon College, 8-7, in the tenth inning Friday night.

The Hawks were facing a 7-4 deficit in the bottom of the eighth and rallied to score four runs in the final three innings, including two runs in the ninth.

The last time Methodist baseball had back-to-back games (regular or postseason) extend to extra innings was in 2016 when the Monarchs went to ten innings against Guilford and William Peace on consecutive days. However, Methodist was victorious in both games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chris Fisher was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the tenth and a sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Will Cosby delivered the game-winning hit that dropped through the right side to score Fisher from second for the win.
  • Meanwhile in the top of the tenth, Rob Wilkerson was left stranded on second and Parker Clayton on first.
  • Another game, another two-out comeback by a Methodist opponent, this time in the bottom of the ninth. A wild pitch moved runners to second and third and Nick Swisher delivered the clutch hit through the right side to drive in the game-tying two runs to force extra innings.
  • Methodist erupted for six runs to take a 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth. The Monarchs took advantage of a huge error to score the first two runs. The shortstop's throw to first base sailed far into the outfield and Will May went from being a groundout to advancing all the way to third while Tucker Criswell scored from first.
  • Methodist was not done though, scoring their next four runs of the inning with two outs. Ethan Carmack hit a RBI double to left center and Matthias Carter (two RBIs) and Alex Kachler (one RBI) both put singles through the left side to score three.
  • The Hawks scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the deficit to 6-4. In the fifth, Garrett Breland's hit dropped between three fielders for his second RBI-double of the game.

STAT FACTS
  • All seven Methodist runs were unearned as the Monarchs were aided by four Huntingdon errors, including three committed by the Hawks' shortstop.
  • Carmack finished with a team-high two hits, one RBI, and one run scored.
  • Parker Clayton reached base three times (one hit and two walks) and scored twice. Carter, Wilkerson, and Kachler finished with one hit and one walk for the game.
  • Knight led Huntingdon with three hits and the trio of Heath Haskins, Swisher, and Breland registered two hits a piece, accounting for nine of the ten Hawks' hits. Cosby's game-winning single was the exception.
