FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Both games of Saturday's USA South Athletic Conference softball doubleheader went the distance as the Monarchs challenged visiting Meredith College through the final out. The Avenging Angels, however, walked off with the sweep after a 1-0 Game 1 victory and a 5-2 win in the second game.
An Avenging Angels' score in the first inning stood as the only run and the winning run in the opener. Despite the loss,
Brittany Jones was lights out in the game. Jones gave up six hits and only one run while pitching a complete game.
Prior to the start of the twin bill, the Monarchs honored the four seniors from the team ---
Hannah Key,
Savannah Dunn,
Ashley Benge, and
Heidi Foreman.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bryce Smith is credited with the winning RBI as she scored Kelsey Mabe in Game 1. Meredith had three hits in the inning but had three hits in the other eight innings combined.
- With only one run and ten hits tallied, Game 1 can definitely be characterized as a pitchers' duel. Sarah Gundlach went toe-to-toe with Jones. Gundlach pitched a shutout while allowing only three hits.
- In the second game, the Monarchs tied the game up at 2-2 in the third inning after RBI singles from Kelsey Smith and Blythe Best. The two runs came after Anna Goldman scored two for Meredith with a double in the second inning.
- In the next inning, Savannah Pierce broke the tie with a RBI single and the Avenging Angels added two more runs in the sixth to provide Meredith with some cushion.
- Methodist finished the first game with three runners left stranded. Bethany Junker was the lone Monarch to make it past first base.
STAT FACTS
- Junker had two hits in Game 2 and a hit in the first game and Best had a hit in each game.
- Hannah Key had the lone extra-base hit in either game for Methodist with a double in Game 1.
- It was a tough day for the Monarch offense as Methodist totaled nine hits in the two games combined.
- Jordyn Propst pitched a complete game in Game 2.
- Bryce Smith led Meredith at the plate with two hits in each game.
SENIOR DAY
- The senior quartet have combined for 99 walks, 89 hits, 74 runs scored, and 35 runs batted in (and counting), as well as 27 appearances on the mound for a total of 46.1 innings.
- The four seniors have won 33 games (and counting) overall in their careers, including 16 USA South Athletic Conference games.
