Sweep of Tornados on Senior Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist baseball picked up a win on its Senior Day against visiting Brevard College, 4-1, in USA South Athletic Conference play Sunday afternoon. The victory also gives the Monarchs a season sweep of the Tornados.

Before the game, Methodist honored the team's five seniors -- Seth Beard, Tyler Carmen, Thomas Dean, Will May and Bryan Shira.

Beard got the start on the mound and delivered a glitzy performance with seven strikeouts. He allowed only five hits and one earned run during his seven innings.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Brevard, 4-1
Records: Methodist 24-6 (14-4 USA South), Brevard 6-23 (1-19)
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarch bats caught fire briefly for the third inning, resulting in three runs. The inning began with two singles, an Alex Kachler double, and a sacrifice fly from Tucker Criswell. The Tornados chance to counter in the fourth ended with the bases loaded, runners left stranded.
  • That was enough to catapult Methodist over Brevard as the final six innings went scoreless.
  • It was a pitchers' faceoff between Beard and Matthew Scavotto. Scavotto pitched five innings in relief and only allowed one hit and two walks to keep any more Monarch runs off the board.
  • Brae Wooten ruined Beard's potential shutout with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

STAT FACTS
  • Seven different Monarchs registered hits in the game. Clay Richardson and May finished with a hit and drew two walks. Carter had a hit and one walk. The trio also each had a stolen base.
  • Tyler Brown earned his first collegiate save. He pitched two innings, gave up two walks and no hits with two strikeouts.

SENIOR DAY
  • This crop of seniors have won 93 games overall and 45 USA South Athletic Conference games (and counting) in their four-year career.
  • Beard has logged 35 appearances on the mound with 27 starts. He has a 9-7 record with 143 strikeouts in 142.1 innings.
  • Dean has 59 appearances on the mound. He has a 4-2 record with five saves, as well as 80 strikeouts in 99.2 innings.
  • Carmen has made 18 trips to the mound, all in relief. He has a 2-1 record with 24 strikeouts in 23.1 innings.
  • This game marks Will May 101st start and 124th appearance as a Monarch. He has 108 hits and 70 RBIs.
  • With eight games remaining plus the conference tournament, all these Monarchs have a chance to add to those totals.
