FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist University Department of Athletics announced Monday that it will induct five new members and a team of distinction into its Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, November 1, 2019.

The Homecoming Weekend ceremony will welcome individuals Mike Baker '84, Billy Chapman '99, Kristina (Kavanagh) Blaylock '90, Adrienne (Midgley) Dombrowsky '02 and coach Jim Sypult into the Hall of Fame. Also entering the Hall of Fame will be the women's basketball teams from the 2001-02 and 2002-03 'era.'

Baker was a member of a Monarch men's golf team that made appearances in the NCAA championship each of his four years with the program. A two-time All-American (1983, 1984), Baker was a 1984 first-team USA South All-Conference player who also finished in the runner-up position at that season's conference tournament.

His team finished as the national runner-up at the 1984 NCAA Division III tournament, the program's highest national finish until breaking through for its first NCAA championship in 1990.

Chapman was a four-time, first-team all-conference baseball player, earning USA South rookie of the year honors in 1996 and the league's player of the year award in 1999, the same season he was voted a third-team All-American.

During his time with the program, Monarch baseball earned three USA South regular season titles (1996, 1998, 1999), won the 1996 conference tournament, made three trips to NCAA Regionals (1996, 1998, 1999) and advanced into the 1996 NCAA College World Series.

Chapman posted a career record of 18-3 as a pitcher and his winning percentage on the mound (.857) ranks second in program history. From the batter's box he ranks second in career doubles (53), third in home runs (32), and fourth in hits (239) and runs scored (206). His 1999 batting average of .399 ranks 14th on the all-time single-season record listing.

Kavanagh was an early catalyst of Methodist's power-house women's golf program, helping to put the Monarchs on the map with their second, third and fourth D-III national championships in 1987, 1988 and 1989, and with a runner-up finish in 1990.

The 1988 individual national champion, Kavanagh would finish her career as a three-time first-team All-American (1988, 1989, 1990).

Midgley was a three-time All-USA South softball player, earning first-team honors in 1999 and 2002, and a second-team selection in 2001. The 1999 conference rookie of the year also was named to USA South all-tournament teams in 2001 and 2002.

Methodist captured regular-season conference titles three times (1999, 2000 and 2002) and won the league tournament in 2000 while Midgley patrolled the outfield. Her teams also made a pair of appearances (1999, 2000) in NCAA D-III national tournaments.

Midgley remains the program's career record holder in at-bats (548) and hits (211). She also ranks second in runs scored (151), third in games played (175) and sacrifices (27), fourth in stolen bases (71) and total bases (255) and fifth in career batting average (.385).

Sypult was a fixture on the sidelines for 19 years, leading the Monarch football team to an overall record of 89-100 during that span. He posted 10 seasons of .500 or better, and his 2005 squad shared the conference crown.

The Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach (DIAC) of the Year in 2000, Sypult would coach 13 All-Americans, 93 all-conference players, two DIAC defensive players of the year, one offensive player of the year and one rookie of the year during his time leading the Methodist program.

Women's basketball put together back-to-back DIAC championship in 2002 and 2003, advancing into the NCAA tournament with each of those titles.

The Monarchs finished the 2001-02 campaign with a 17-12 overall record and 10-4 mark within the league, and were paced by Kelly Holland's 9.3 points per game average.

The 2002-03 squad posted a 19-10 record and topped the league standings with a 10-5 record, downing Christopher Newport University, 56-53, to capture the league title. Methodist dropped a heartbreaking 50-49 loss in the opening round of the 2003 NCAA tournament.

First-team all-conference selection Latasha Watlington (15.3 PPG), Stacy Holland (12.4) and Jennifer Dollyhigh (10.5) formed a trio of Monarchs that averaged double-figures in Methodist's national tournament-bound season.

The Class of 2019 elevates the number of individual inductees in the Hall of Fame to 97, and the number of teams of distinction inducted to 18. The formal induction ceremony will be part of the University's Homecoming Weekend.
