Final score: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 4-1
Records: Methodist 3-4 (0-1 USA South), Pfeiffer 5-3 (1-0)
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Laura Harris was a one-woman wrecking crew as she beat two defenders and finished the play with a capital G (Goal) by beating the Pfeiffer goalkeeper too.
- Make no mistake, the Methodist defense and goalie Maggie Hunt played really well despite the final score. The Falcons' first two goals came off of rebounds, a result unlucky bounces for the Monarchs. On Cayci Eaton's equalizer in the 31st minute, Hunt earned back-to-back saves in the matter of 15 seconds before Eaton recovered her own rebound and cashed in.
- On the second Pfeiffer goal in the 42nd minute, Hunt earned the save on Tracey Torrez' shot but the deflection allowed for an easy Kelsy Esquivel goal.
- The dagger goal came a minute later. Just outside of the corner of the box for a free kick, Mackenzie Priutt delivered with perfect placement over Hunt's outstretched hand to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead in the first half.
- Altogether, Hunt earned eight saves with five coming in the first half. The Monarch defense provided her with cover with three blocked shots through the first 45 minutes but Hunt and the Monarch defense made a number of "goal line stands" that would not show up on a boxscore in the game.
