Monarch Duo Not Enough Against Bishops’ Hot Night

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  Methodist men's basketball could not withstand the great shooting night by host North Carolina Wesleyan as the Battling Bishops defeated the visiting Monarchs, 90-84, in USA South Athletic Conference action Wednesday evening.

Garren Dearman (23 on 9-of-16 shooting) and Dante Burden (20 on 7-of-15 shooting) combined for 43 points but that was not enough to overcome N.C. Wesleyan shooting 58 percent from the field and 56 percent from behind the arc with 10 makes from deep.

Dearman and Burden were especially explosive in the second half, combining for 33 of the Monarchs' 45 points in the final period. At one point, the duo scored 17 consecutive points for Methodist and 24 of the Monarchs' final 26 points.

The game featured eight ties and 13 lead changes with the final lead switch coming at the 11-minute mark in the second half. With 1:46 left in the game, Calvin Manley made it a two-point, 79-77 game before the Battling Bishops went on a game-breaking 7-0 run to lead 86-77 with 33 seconds remaining.
