Arcadia Steals Win in The Seventh

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  On the first day of the Diamond Invitational, visiting Arcadia University scored four runs in the seventh inning to overtake Methodist baseball for a 4-3 win in non-conference play Friday afternoon at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

Two Arcadia hits, three walks, and two Methodist errors resulted in the four runs crossing the plate. The game went scoreless for three innings after the Monarchs had jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the third.

Kachler led the way in Methodist's home opener, going two-for-four with a pair of doubles. Starting pitcher Will Walker went 6.1 innings, allowing four hits and only two earned runs, with four strikeouts. Prior to the seventh, Walker had given up just two hits and one walk.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Arcadia def. Methodist, 4-3
Records: Methodist 2-2, Arcadia 1-0
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs were able to capitalize off of three of their four extra base hits. Clay Richardson was the first run on the board after he doubled to lead off the second inning. He scored after a sacrifice bunt and a fielder's choice.
  • In the third, Tucker Criswell followed Kachler's double with a two-base hit of his own, scoring Kachler. Criswell later scored on a Rob Wilkerson single.
  • Arcadia finally broke through in the seventh. It opened the inning with a walk and a single. An error on a sacrifice bunt attempt and two consecutive wild pitches resulted in two runs scoring while the tying run scored after an error attempting to field another sacrifice bunt.
  • It was just not the best inning fielding or pitching for Methodist as the game-winning run scored thanks to a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Kachler's first double came in his first at-bat. He was left stranded on third, one of five runners left on base for Methodist.
  • Hunter Barnes, who pitched 2.2 innings in relief, deserves credit for escaping the seventh and ninth innings. The bases were loaded both times but it resulted in just one run for the Knights.

STAT FACTS
  • The Monarch bats were ice cold following the fourth inning. Methodist racked up seven hits prior to the fifth and none afterwards.
  • Criswell and Wilkerson each finished with one hit and one RBI.
  • Officially, Barnes allowed one hit and registered three strikeouts.
  • Arcadia's relievers won the day for the Knights. Tyler Costaro and Mitch Blake each went three innings without allowing a run. They combined to allow just one hit and earned seven strikeouts, six belonging to Blake.
