FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. From the opening pitch, Methodist baseball overpowered visiting Virginia Wesleyan University as the Monarchs scored runs in each of the game's first four innings, leading to an 11-3 victory over the Marlins in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon.
Tucker Criswell's triple in the fourth inning effectively put the stamp on the game as he scored two to give Methodist a 6-2 advantage. For added security, the Monarchs padded the lead with four more runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
It was the perfect outing for
Rob Wilkerson. He finished three-for-three with three runs scored, two stolen bases, and one RBI. He was supported by two hits each from
Matthias Carter,
Tucker Criswell, and
Ethan Carmack. Criswell and Carmack finished with a game-high three RBIs apiece. Overall, eight different Monarchs crossed homeplate.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final Score: Methodist def. Virginia Wesleyan, 11-3
Records: Methodist 4-3; Virginia Wesleyan 0-4
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the third and fourth innings, Methodist scored a combined five runs after getting two outs. Three consecutive two-out hits, including a Carmack triple, led to Wilkerson and Jordan Cassell scoring in the third.
- In the fourth, the Monarchs took advantage of a Marlins' error on what should have been a third out and scored three unearned runs after Criswell's two-RBI triple to left center and Wilkerson's single to cross Criswell home for the 7-2 advantage.
- Carter registered the first hit and the first run of the game after he led off with a single to centerfield and scored from second base following a single from Criswell.
- In the second inning, it was more of the same for Methodist. A leadoff single from Wilkerson eventually became a run scored for Wilkerson after a Wesley Hall sacrifice bunt.
- Three hits (two singles and a Hall double) resulted in three more runs for the Monarchs in the seventh.
- Virginia Wesleyan's lone three runs scored came from a hit by pitch or a wild pitch.
STAT FACTS
- The game could have gotten even more out of hand as the Monarchs left 11 men stranded on base, including a bases loaded, one-out situation in the eighth inning.
- McKinley Strickland drew a team-high two walks, while Carter and Criswell drew a walk to go with their two hits.
- Lance Fuerstenberg was credited with the win on the "staff day" and he went the longest of any of the Methodist pitchers, going 3.2 innings with four strikeouts. He did not allow a hit nor a run in his time on the mound. Will Walker and Noah Latta also each pitched an inning of hitless, scoreless baseball.
