BEREA, Ky. Calvin Manley and
Kaymon Mitchell combined for 40 points as Methodist handled its business in the regular season finale by defeating host Berea College, 83-73, in USA South Athletic Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Monarchs led by as many as 18 points with 11 minutes remaining. Berea was able to whittle down the deficit to three points, with the score at 76-73, with under three to play.
Manley and Mitchell each scored 20 points to lead the Monarchs. Mitchell's 16 rebounds tie a career-high. Manley went 10-of-12 from the charity stripe, both career-high numbers. He had 18 of his 20 points in the second half and he finished with seven rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Leading 76-73 with 2:31 left, the Monarchs held Berea scoreless the rest of the game to hold on for the win. Mitchell delivered with a clutch play following the Mountaineers' score to make it a one-possession game. Following a missed Methodist three, Mitchell corralled three consecutive offensive rebounds before finally making the layup for the 78-73 score.
- Dante Burden put the proverbial nail-in-the-coffin when he earned a steal and made the fastbreak layup to put the Monarchs ahead 82-73 with 1:06 remaining. His steal and bucket was a potential four or five-point swing in favor of Methodist.
- After a three from Dante Burden put Methodist ahead 63-45 with an 18-point lead and 11 minutes remaining, the Mountaineers immediately went on a 14-3 run to cut the deficit to 66-59. Berea used an 11-5 run to further cut the deficit to 76-73 with 2:31 left.
- The Monarchs embarked on a 13-3 run over a two-minute span to turn a 42-35 advantage into a 53-38 lead. Manley scored the first five points of the run.
- Consecutive threes from Garren Dearman and Kevin McLaughlin Jr. led to the Monarchs owning a 27-12 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. An early 9-0 run gave Methodist a 13-4 advantage at the 13-minute mark.
STAT FACTS
- Methodist had a whopping 24-2 edge in points off of turnovers and a 20-8 edge in second chance points.
- The Monarchs committed just seven turnovers to the Mountaineers' 18 and they had 18 offensive boards to just six for Berea.
- Burden finished third on the team with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. He had a team-high five assists, four steals, and two blocks, plus five boards.
- Dearman was the the other Monarch to score in double-digits with 13 points on four-of-nine shooting, as well as three steals.
- Isaac Caudill led Berea with a game-high 22 points.
