Lead Slips Away at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C.  Methodist played a strong opening portion of Saturday's non-conference women's lacrosse tilt at Guilford College, answering the Quakers' opening goal with three straight for a 3-1 advantage. But Guilford scored the next seven goals and eventually claimed a 16-5 win over the visiting Monarchs.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Guilford def. Methodist, 16-5
Records: Methodist 1-2, Guilford 5-0
Location: Armfield Athletic Center; Greensboro, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Though the Monarchs surrendered the opening goal, they answered strongly with three unanswered markers over a five-minute span.
  • Ally Nagel, off an assist from Sarena Pillow, put Methodist up on the scoreboard with a tying goal at the 19:03 mark, followed by a go-ahead unassisted goal from Alaijah Ward less than three minutes later.
  • A second man-up opportunity in the game allowed Taylor Mustian to cash in on the chance, notching her first career goal as a Monarch, finishing off a feed from Nagel at the 14:42 mark.
  • The seven-goal Guilford stretch started slowly, with a goal at the 12:41 mark, and then six more minutes elapsed before Madison Iandoli would score the equalizer at 6:09.
  • One minute later the Quakers moved ahead, and then notched three more before the halftime break, and adding one more to the stretch near the beginning of the second half.
  • Nagel would notch her second of the game, halting the Guilford run, but only temporarily as the Quakers responded with six unanswered to ice the game.
  • Pillow scored with a little more than 10 minutes to play, with Jaime Logan earning the assist, but there was no coming back from the Quakers' pair of runs that preceded the goal.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • In a physical game, Guilford was charged with four yellow cards, to only one against Methodist.
  • Methodist's Julee Delellis was a bright spot in the defensive third, causing a team-best three turnovers and coming up with a game-high nine ground balls.
  • With two goals and an assist, Saturday's three-point afternoon was Nagel's second in just three games played this season.
  • Jem Golombeski came up with a career-best 12 saves between the pipes for Methodist.
  • Guilford won the battle on draws, posting a 16-of-22 afternoon with Iandoli coming up with 11 of those Quaker draw controls.
