HOW IT HAPPENED
- After logging just five hits in the first game, the Monarchs' bats came roaring alive with 16 hits in the second. Methodist led things off with a three-run first inning. The Monarchs loaded the bases after singles from Carter and Tucker Criswell, and a Alex Kachler walk. A Wilkerson sacrifice fly scored Carter before Clay Richardson cleared the bases with a triple for two more scores.
- Methodist stretched its lead to 5-0 in the fifth after Criswell and Yarbrough scored. The duo reached first on a double and single, respectively.
- The Cougars broke up their blank sheet by turning two hits into two runs in the seventh.
- Averett tallied one run in the third inning and that stood as Game 1's only run until the seventh inning. The Monarchs finally broke through by crossing three runners in the seventh. Methodist recorded two singles in the inning and were aided by two Averett errors, leading to two unearned errors.
- The Cougars will definitely have an entire practice devoted to covering sacrifice bunts as Averett committed two errors in that situation. The first gaffe was a throwing error by the catcher that led to Wilkerson scoring the game-tying run. The second mistake was even more egregious as a throwing error on the pitcher led to Yarbrough and Richardson scoring.
- Will Dagenhart scored the fourth Methodist run on a Carter single in the ninth.
