Tough Afternoon in Maryville, Tenn.

MARYVILLE, Tenn.  Maryville (Tenn.) College got the best of Methodist softball in a non-conference doubleheader as the Fighting Scots won 8-5 in the first game and won Game 2 in five innings, by a score of 13-5 Sunday afternoon.

In both contests, the Monarchs put up multiple runs in the final inning to cut down deficits. Methodist scored four runs in the seventh in the opener, and five runs in the fifth inning of the second game.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Maryville (Tenn.) def. Methodist, 8-5; Maryville (Tenn.) def. Methodist, 13-5 (5 Inn.)
Records: Methodist 7-7; Maryville (Tenn.) 5-1
Location: MC Softball Complex; Maryville, Tenn.

THE ESSENTIALS
  • Trailing 8-1 in the final inning of Game 1, the Monarchs managed to load the bases after a Taylor Jacobs' walk and singles from Liz Schmitz and Jordyn Propst. Carleigh Haywood cleared the bases with a left center triple. Sarah Davis reached first and advanced to second an error with Haywood scoring in the process to cut the deficit to 8-4. The game ended on a double play before Methodist was able to truly put the Scots in danger.
  • The Monarchs previously scored in the third. Brittany Jones scored on a first baseman error on a Haywood at-bat. Down 3-1, at the time, the inning ended with runners on the corner.
  • Maryville (Tenn.) raced out to a 10-0 lead by the third inning of the second game. Methodist recovered by scoring five runs in the fifth off of four hits. With one out, the Monarchs had the bases loaded and Kelsey Smith double to centerfield scored two. There were three more runs scored in the inning with Jacobs, Propst, and Reagan Parks registering the RBIs.
  • Unfortunately, the Scots were still able to force a mercy rule ending when they turned five hits into three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

STAT FACTS
  • Methodist had six hits in each game.
  • Smith had two hits and two RBIs in Game 2. That triple from Haywood gave her a team-high three RBIs for the first game.
  • In addition to Haywood and Smith's extra-base hits, Bethany Junker had a double for the day.
  • Jazmine Geary led Maryville with five total hits.
