FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist men's tennis earned its first win of the season in resounding fashion Wednesday, shutting out visiting Alfred (N.Y.) University, 9-0, in a non-conference match at the Clayton Tennis Center.
All but two of the Monarchs' previous 12 matches on the 2019-20 schedule have been against competition outside of Methodist's NCAA Division III level. Wednesday's win makes its D-III mark 1-2 this spring.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was quick.
- The three Methodist doubles pairings won without surrendering a game, each closing out 8-0 victories heading into singles action.
- Hayden Wilfong picked up the first singles point for Methodist, completing a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4.
- Trent Harner at 1-singles and Coleman Baker at No. 2 then added wins, also shutting out their Saxons opponents.
- Tyler Kane at 3-singles was next with a 6-0, 6-0 win, followed by a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 by Henry Blanco.
- Completing the shutout bid for Methodist was E.J. Stolmeijer at 6-singles, also with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
