Walker and Eller Stellar on The Mound

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.   Methodist baseball held on for a 7-5 win against visiting Hanover College in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.

The Monarchs survived scares in the eighth and ninth innings as Hanover was able to only score a total of two runs off of two separate bases-loaded situations. In the eighth while trailing 5-3, the Panthers had the bases jammed with no outs and only managed one run. Rob Wilkerson's two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth gave Methodist a bit more breathing room to survive a final bases loaded situation from Hanover in the ninth. Altogether, Hanover placed seven runners on base in the final two innings and scored just twice.

Will Walker went six innings and allowed just one earned run, scattering seven hits while striking out seven. Stephen Eller pitched three innings in relief and survived the two bases-loaded situations, giving up two hits and one earned run (two unearned) in the process to secure his first career save.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Hanover, 7-5
Records: Methodist 12-6, Hanover 6-7
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Two Methodist errors and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with no outs for Eller on the mound. He induced a lineout to Jacob Austin who completed the double play by throwing to Matthias Carter for a second out at second base. The third out came on a "botched" steal that scored one runner for Hanover.
  • In the ninth, two singles and a walk led to another bases loaded situation for Eller. With one out and the game-tying run at first base, Eller struck out Andrew Littlefield for out #2, who entered the contest batting .391. The final out to win the game was a flyout to centerfield after a walk scored one for the Panthers.
  • Jacob Austin found himself in scoring position after drawing a walk, stealing second, and advancing to third on a throwing error by the Panthers' catcher. Alex Kachler was intentionally walked and stole second to have two runners in scoring position for Wilkerson. Wilkerson delivered with a hit to left field to score two to put Methodist ahead 7-4.
  • Christian Yarbrough's first career extra base hit was an emphatic two-run homer over the left field fence in the second inning to give Methodist an early 3-1 advantage.

STAT FACTS
  • One more win! Coach Tom Austin now sits at 1,999 career wins at Methodist University.
  • Every runner counts and this game is a perfect example. The Monarchs stranded just one runner on base in this game, compared to seven left on base for Hanover.
  • Wilkerson and Criswell both recorded two hits, tied for the team-high.
  • The two RBIs from Wilkerson and Yarbrough were also tied for the team lead.
  • Kachler drew two walks, along with a RBI double. He scored two runs, a team-high.
