Throwback Thursday: Hall of Fame Class of 2002

Our trip down memory lane continues with an MU Hall of Fame class that includes a national champion, All-American honors, conference honors, MVPs, program firsts, and a highly-decorated coach.

Alan Dawson was the men's head soccer coach at Methodist from 1987-1995. While at Methodist, Dawson posted an impressive 129-30-1 record with seven consecutive Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships and six straight NCAA Division III national tournament appearances. His 1995 Monarch squad was ranked No. 1 in the nation throughout the regular season and finished as NCAA D-III runner-up. Dawson also led the Monarchs to the Sweet 16 in 1990 and 1991 and the Elite Eight in 1992. He was a five-time DIAC Coach of the Year and two-time NCAA D-III South Region Coach of the Year. During his tenure at Methodist, Dawson coached 32 All-South Region players, seven NCAA D-III All-Americans and two Academic All-Americans. Named the head coach at Old Dominion University prior to the 1997 season, Dawson's 23-year record (247-147-41) as the ODU Monarchs' leader includes a program-record win total, 19 winning seasons and 12 appearances in the NCAA D-I national tournament, reaching the third round in 2006 and 2007.

Elaine Adams '80, was one of the pioneers of female athletics at Methodist, lettering in basketball, volleyball and softball from 1977 to 1980. In basketball, Adams was a two-time team Most Valuable Player and averaged 33 points a game. She was also a two-time team MVP in volleyball and led both the basketball and volleyball teams to NCAIAW state championships. In addition, Adams also was a starter for the Monarchs in softball. She is the second player from the women's basketball and softball programs to be inducted into the Hall, and first representative from the volleyball program.

John McCullough Jr. '90 was the first (in 1990) of six individual NCAA Division III national champions in Methodist's powerful men's golf program. In addition, he is the first three-time NCAA D-III All-American (1988, 1989, 1990) in the history of Methodist men's golf and was also a two-time Academic All-American. A three-time All-Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, McCullough was a part of Monarch teams that finished third in the nation in 1987, fifth in 1988, and were the NCAA D-III runners-up in 1989 before claiming the first NCAA championship for Methodist in 1990. McCullough is the second player from the men's golf program to gain induction to the MU Hall of Fame.
