Throwback Thursday: Hall of Fame Class of 2003

Our Methodist Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2003 includes a trio of athletes who expand the Hall induction numbers of the Monarch women's golf, women's basketball and men's basketball programs.

This induction class owns school and NCAA records, and earned individual and team national titles during their time at Methodist.

An offensive force for the Monarch women's basketball team from 1989-1993, Daphne Akridge was the first Methodist women's basketball player to garner first team All-Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors. She was a two-time first team selection in 1992 and 1993, and helped lead Methodist to its first DIAC Championship in 1992. In addition, Akridge holds Methodist career records for points scored (1,458), made field goals (556) and made free throws (338), plus single-season records for points scored (466) and free throws (144). Twice in her career Akridge paced the team in assists (1991-92, 135; 1992-93,102) and in steals (1989-90, 54; 1992-93, 67). She is the third member of the women's basketball program to earn induction into the Hall.

Elizabeth Horton was one of many standouts that have made the Methodist women's golf program the national powerhouse that it is today. She is one of only three Methodist women's golfers to win consecutive national championships, capturing individual titles in 1994 and 1995. In addition, Horton -- the second women's golfer inducted into the Hall -- was also a four-time All-American, and helped lead the Monarchs to four straight NGCA Division III national championships (1992-1995).

In his short time with the Monarch men's basketball team (1988-1990), Clinton Montford was a rebounding force for the Monarchs. Despite standing just 6 feet 1 inch tall, Montford still shares the NCAA Division III record for rebounds in a single game with 36 against Warren Wilson in 1989. He holds the Monarch single-season record for rebounds (459) in 1988-89, leading the nation in rebounding (17.0 RPG) while helping to push Methodist to its first winning season in more than a decade. Montford is the fourth player from the men's basketball program to earn Hall induction.
