Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Burden, Dearman Lead Monarchs in Season Opener at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va.  It has been 317 days since the Methodist University men's basketball team has taken to the court, but Sunday's eager resumption of action brought with it a 78-65 non-conference loss to host University of Lynchburg in the season opener for both teams.
Dante Burden and Garren Dearman led the Monarchs in scoring, with 20 and 15 points, respectively

THE ESSENTIALS
Final Score: Lynchburg def. Methodist, 78-65
Records: Methodist 0-1; Lynchburg 1-0
Location: Wayne Proffitt Court at Turner Gymnasium; Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hornets flew out to a quick 5-0 lead at the start, but a determined Methodist squad worked back into contention. A Dearman 3-pointer pulled Methodist to within a bucket, and Burden's trey from just left of the top of the arc inched the Monarchs ahead, 15-14.
  • Lynchburg regained the lead its next time down the court, only to surrender that advantage on Methodist's possession after Dearman grabbed a loose ball in the key and quickly went up for a successful layin (17-16).
  • That proved to be the final lead Methodist would own in the contest, as Lynchburg embarked on a 21-8 run to close out the first half and played even with the Monarchs in second-half action.

THE NUMBERS
  • Burden and Dearman were joined in double-digit scoring only by the Hornets' T.C. Thacker (16 points) and Landon Sutton (12). The difference on the scoreboard, however, was reflective of the 32-8 advantage Lynchburg had in bench points.
  • J'Quan Deal led Methodist on the glass with nine rebounds, though Thacker led all rebounders with 19 for his double-double.
  • The Monarch defense, spearheaded by Dearman's six steals – one more than the Lynchburg team total – and three blocks, forced 25 turnovers, and took advantage of the miscues to forge a 25-7 edge in points off turnovers.

UP NEXT
  • The game at Lynchburg marked the only non-conference outing this season for Methodist, which now turns to USA South Athletic Conference action across the remainder of its schedule.
  • The Monarchs will travel to Raleigh, N.C., to face William Peace University on Friday afternoon for the two teams' league opener.
  • William Peace will then travel to Fayetteville where the Monarchs will host the Pacers Sunday at 2 p.m.
