Penalties! Methodist's Two Penalty Kicks Lifted Them to Victory

RALEIGH, N.C.  It took double overtime but Methodist women's soccer managed to get 2-1 victory in USA South Athletic Conference action against host Meredith College Wednesday night at the MC Athletic Complex.

The hero of the night was sophomore Madison Brunson who notched both of the Monarchs goals, with the two goals coming off penalty kicks.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Meredith, 2-1 (2OT)
Records: Methodist 11-1 (8-0 USA South), Meredith 6-4-2 (4-2-2)
Location: MC Athletic Complex; Raleigh, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 9th minute, Methodist was awarded a penalty kick after an Avenging Angels tackle that was called a foul in the box. Brunson would take the kick and beat the keeper to her left for the first score.
  • Meredith responded back with the equalizer in the 27th minute. A free kick from about 30 yards out went toward the net, but Caley Justice could not clear the ball as it just went over her outstretched arms into the net.
  • After going scoreless in the second half and the first overtime period, the 107th minute saw the tie broken up. Once again, Brunson was fouled in the box giving her another penalty kick before punching it in to seal the win.
NUMBERS
  • This was an aggressive match for both sides as the foul count reached 21, Methodist with 10 and the Avenging Angels with 11.
  • Both Brunson and Alyssa Morrell had a game-high three shots on goal for the Monarchs.
  • Meredith was fortunate to only give up two goals as the Methodist offense was relentless this evening. Getting off 15 total shots, nine on target, and with eight corner kicks showed they clearly controlled the ball in the attacking third.
