JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Guilford, 66-64
Records: Methodist 1-2, Guilford 0-2
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Guilford found themselves up 5-0 in the first three minutes of the contest before Methodist tied it up 7-7. A jumper by Dante Burden then started a 6-0 run for the Monarchs to take the lead 16-11.
- Methodist increased the difference to six, 19-13, after Kevin McLaughlin Jr. knocked down a three for their largest lead in the first half. The Quakers used a late 5-0 run to trim the deficit to be down 30-28 at the half.
- The first six minutes of the second half was all Guilford as they came out on a 12-0 run to take a 40-30 advantage. Nearly seven minutes past before Burden gave the Monarchs their first points of the second with two free throws.
- The Quakers kept a stead double-digit lead for a good portion of the half before Methodist came roaring back. In less than a minute, the Monarchs scored eight unanswered points with Burden coming up with two key steals that led to layups to make it a three-point game.
- Methodist would tie the game 53-53 after a made three by McLaughlin for the first time in the second half. With less than three minutes left, Brone Brinson swished his own shot from behind the arc to give the Monarch their first lead, 56-55.
- After the teams traded a couple of buckets, Coe came up with his first of two big shots by receiving a pass from McLaughlin in the corner and making the shot to go up 63-61. Guilford than came down the court and hit a three of their own to take a 64-63 advantage.
- On the next Monarchs possession, a bad pass saw the ball get loose and looked like it was going out of bounds on Methodist. At the last moment before going out, Coe was able to secure it and then chucked a corner three and drained the shot to put the Monarchs up with 2 seconds left in the ball game. Methodist would win after the Quakers could not get a final shot off.
