Methodist Used A Monster Second Quarter To Claim First Win of Season

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist women's basketball collects their first victory, 53-43, against Mary Baldwin University in a USA South Athletic Conference game, in the March F. Riddle Center, on Saturday afternoon.

A strong second quarter by the Monarchs was the difference maker in the contest. Along with a strong performance by freshman Kiley Hicks, who had a season-high 18 points and six rebounds.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Mary Baldwin, 53-43
Records: Methodist 1-3 (1-0 USA South), Mary Baldwin 4-1 (0-1)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a low scoring first frame, Methodist found themselves with an 8-2 advantage with under four minutes left. After Aneesa Irizarry's driving layup to make it 10-4, the Fighting Squirrels scored the final four points of the quarter to go down two heading into the new period, 10-8.
  • The Monarchs jumped right out of the gate by starting on a 7-0 run to push their lead to a nine-point difference. Later in the second, Rebecca McGaughnea converted a jumper to start a five-minute span where Methodist put 14 unanswered points to make an almost 20-point buffer.
  • With the score being 33-14 after the break, Mary Baldwin was able to cut down the deficit by getting the first nine points of the third quarter. Jumpers by Irizarry and Aniyah Tate helped keep the Monarchs advantage to double-digits before the third came to a close, 38-27.
  • The first 70 seconds of the final frame saw each side trading buckets concluding with Jessica Drake knocking down a three-pointer. Though Methodist were outscored in the fourth, Hicks stopped any late push by the Fighting Squirrels by scoring the final six points for the Monarchs.
MORE TO IT
  • Besides Hicks, Tate was the only other Methodist player with double-digit points with ten.
  • The Monarchs showed they were strong on the glass by securing 35 rebounds over Mary Baldwin's 26. Drake especially helped in the cause by collecting a career-high eight boards.
  • Methodist shot a season-high 54.3% (25-46) from the field, including shooting 91.7% (11-12) in the second quarter.
