William Peace Outpaces Monarchs in Doubleheader

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  William Peace University snagged both games of a non-conference doubleheader against host Methodist baseball on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers won the first game, 7-5, at Armstrong-Shelley Field before claiming the second game by a score of 16-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In Game 1, the Monarchs scored all five of their runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Christian Yarbrough scored the team's first run off an RBI single from Jordan Cassell in the fifth. Cassell and Jacob Austin also scored in the fifth, thanks to a Spencer Nelson single. 
  • Yarbrough returned in the sixth with the game-tying run when he stole home on a brilliantly executed double steal, and Cassell pushed Methodist ahead with a run scored off of a Rob Wilkerson single.
  • Trailing 5-4 in the top of the ninth of Game 1, William Peace's Alec Seaton promptly tied the game with a lead-off homerun. With two outs, the Pacers moved back in front with a two-RBI single up the middle.
  • William Peace took control of the second game early on after putting seven runs on the board through the first three innings and adding a nine runs in the fifth.
  • The Monarchs were able to eat into Game 2's deficit by scoring five runs in the sixth. Ryan Hill had a two-RBI double and Wesley Hall had a two-RBI single in the inning. Methodist also added three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

STAT FACTS
  • In Game 2, Hall led with a total of four hits. Nelson had three hits and Hill had two. Austin, Cassell, and Wilkerson each had two hits in the first game.
  • Ethan Caldwell pitched well in relief for Game 2. He went three scoreless innings while striking out four batters and allowing just one hit.
  • For the Pacers, this was their season opening contest. Tyshawn Barrett led William Peace with six hits and six RBIs for the doubleheader.

  • Next up for Methodist baseball is a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Hampden-Sydney College. Those contests are scheduled for Saturday, February 27 at times 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
