FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist put up crooked numbers in three of four at-bats Tuesday afternoon in taking the opener of a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Randolph College, 12-2 in five innings.
The WildCats rallied back from that loss and a four-run deficit in Game 2 to earn a split with their 7-6 victory.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. Randolph 12-2 (5 innings); Randolph def. Methodist 7-6
Records: Methodist 1-3; Randolph 3-1
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarch batters came out banging right from the start of Game 1, plating three runs in the bottom of the first. The quick outburst included singles from Heather Tsapp and Kaley Evans, and an RBI-double from Taylor Jones.
- Their big inning was the bottom of the second, though. Claire Cummings, Bethany Junker, Tsapp, Bri Caton and Sara Darling each worked WildCat pitchers for free passes in the frame, putting themselves in position for others to push them around the bases.
- A Taylor Jones bases-loaded single up the middle scored two of the seven runs; Taylor Bowen ripped an RBI-single up the middle; Caitlyn Holland poked a 2-RBI single late in the inning; and Cummings, who had begun the inning with a walk, dropped down an RBI bunt single.
- Two Randolph runs in the top of the third narrowed its deficit, but Junker's 2-RBI single into right-centerfield late in the bottom half of the fourth pushed the Methodist advantage back to 10 and the Monarchs then closed out the run-rule win with an easy Randolph fifth.
- Starting pitcher Brittany Jones (1-1) earned victory, going three innings in the circle allowing just the two Randolph runs while fanning three and walking only one.
- Taylor Jones, Bowen, Evans and Cummings each collected one RBI apiece in the nightcap, but Randolph erased a four-run deficit with four runs in the top of the third, added two more in their fourth, then withstood a tying two runs by Methodist in its fourth inning by pushing a go-ahead run across in the sixth.
NUMBERS
- Taylor Jones finished her afternoon with three hits and four RBI, and also scored three runs.

- Tsapp had three hits in the day and scored three times.
- Brittany Jones picked up the win in the opener, but took the loss in Game 2 despite three strong innings in the circle, where she scattered five hits and surrendered one run.
