HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs got off to a solid start in their home match against the Marlins, taking two of three in doubles play.
- Sydney Bird and Allyson Hays captured the first Methodist point with an 8-7 (7-5) tiebreak win at No. 3, and then the pairing of Kamdyn Balko and Natalie Collins secured a second point with their 8-5 win at No. 2.
- Singles action turned unfavorably in the direction of the Marlins, however, who swept all six bouts, four in straight sets.
- The holdouts were Collins and Hannah Higgins at Nos. 4 and 6, respectively. Collins rallied from a set down to square her match with Anna Rogers by storming to a 6-0 win. The third-set tiebreak went down to the wire, but Rogers was able to prevail 11-9.
- Higgins had won her opening set, 7-5, but VWU's Amanda Stegemann responded with a second-set win by the same count. Stegemann took the tiebreak set, 10-5.
- In Ashland, Va., the Monarch doubles teams fell behind the Shoremen, 2-1, with Toni Laney and Taylor Jackson securing the one point in an 8-1 rout at No. 2.
- Megan Kidd earned Methodist's second point of the match when her opponent, M.C. Diaz-Nazario retired while leading 4-1 in the first set.
- The last point the Monarchs would claim came at 1-singles with Abby Caddick's straight set 2 and 2 win over Piper Sartison.
- Laney would bounce back from an opening set loss at No. 2 to force a third set, but Irene Meng squeaked out a 6-4 service-break win to claim the match.
