6th Inning Vaults Cougars Past Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  In the USA South Athletic Conference opener for baseball, visiting Averett University stole a 5-3 win over Methodist, using a grand slam in the sixth inning to reverse its fortunes.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Averett def. Methodist, 5-3
Records: Methodist 6-9 (0-1 USA South); Averett 2-8 (1-0)
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Three singles and a sacrifice bunt to start the sixth inning led to one run scored and runners on first and second for Averett. After a flyout for out number two, a walk loaded the bases, setting the stage for Tanner Bradshaw's grand slam to left field. A 2-1 deficit turned into a 5-2 lead for the Cougars in one swing.
  • Trailing by that score, the Monarchs had a chance to respond in the bottom of the fifth. A single from Hunter Hollman put runners on the corner for the Monarchs with Christian Yarbrough at third. A fielder's choice resulted in a rundown attempt and Hollman being tagged for out #1. Yarbrough was out No. 2 as he was tagged at home plate following a bunt attempt. The final out of the inning was also at home plate after Will Dagenhart singled and Casey Nichols tried to advanced home from second but was thrown out by the centerfielder.
  • The Monarchs did manage one run in the bottom of the sixth, which came when Zachary Ritter scored Spencer Nelson off of a left-field single.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Rob Wilkerson scored to give Methodist a 2-0 advantage. Wilkerson scored from first base after a double from Jordan Cassell. Wilkerson also scored the game's first run, which came in the first inning. Wilkerson hit an infield single, stole second, and advanced to third on a balk before a sacrifice fly by Cassell.
  • After being held without a hit through the first four innings by William St. Leger, the Cougars got their first hit in the fifth inning, a double from Bradshaw.
  • Wilkerson led Methodist with three hits and two runs in four at-bats, plus two stolen bases. Christian Yarbrough had two hits and a steal.
  • The loss to Averett snaps an 11-game winning streak that the Monarchs enjoyed over the Cougars, dating back to 2015.
