Monarchs Double Up Lenoir-Rhyne

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist men's tennis had a strong outing Sunday afternoon at the Clayton Tennis Center, the Division III Monarchs taking down D-II Lenoir-Rhyne University, 6-3, in non-conference action.

A 2-1 lead after doubles action provided a jolt heading into singles play in which the Monarchs took four of the six matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The early lead enjoyed by the Monarchs was courtesy of two tandems winning their doubles bouts. Henry Murray and Luke Laney teamed up for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 for the first point of the afternoon, and Samir Tewari and Alex Lycan earned the second point with their 8-3 at 3-doubles.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne pulled even winning the first point from singles play, but Spencer Kieft emphatically lifted Methodist back in front with his 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
  • Quinn McNamara made it 4-2 by rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 win at 4-singles, and Owen Findley at No. 6 added the match-clinching point with his commanding 6-0, 6-1 triumph.
  • The final Methodist point of the afternoon came at 1-singles, where Jordan Theron earned a 6-3, 7-5 win over LRU's Nicolas Moser.

Methodist will host North Carolina Wesleyan College on Tuesday in a 3 p.m. non-conference match at the Clayton Tennis Center.
