GREENSBORO, N.C. Methodist's Division III Monarchs women's tennis team played up in divisions Wednesday afternoon, trying to challenge but falling to D-I Elon University, 7-0, in non-conference action at the Piedmont Indoor Courts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Division I scoring format was used for the match, in which the three doubles flights play to six games (instead of eight, as with D-III matches) and the lone doubles point is awarded to the team taking the best of three.
- The Phoenix swept through the doubles matches, winning all three, to gain the doubles point.
- At 1-singles, Methodist's Abby Caddick tried rallying from a 6-0 opening-set loss to Victoria Saldh, capturing two games in the second set, though falling to Saldh 6-2.
- Toni Laney at No. 2 earned one game in each set of her straight-set loss to Sibel Tanik, and Megan Kidd picked up one game in the second set of her two-set defeat against Olivia Archer at 3-singles.
- Valeria Matute and Olivia Ward earned one game each in their pro-set (play to eight, win by two) losses at Nos. 4 and 5 respectively, while Hannah Higgins battled but was shut out in her pro-set loss at 6-singles.
UP NEXT
- Methodist hosts a doubleheader at the Clayton Tennis Center on Saturday, April 3, beginning with a 10 a.m. non-conference match against Southern Virginia University. And scheduled for a 3 p.m. start is a USA South Athletic Conference match against Pfeiffer University.
- Southern Virginia has been accepted into the USA South and will begin competing as a conference member of the league starting with the 2021-22 academic year.
