GREENSBORO, N.C. After 16 long months, Methodist football finally returned, opening its 2020-21 season with a bang, a 48-14 rout of host Greensboro College in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
Besides a turnover on downs in their first offensive possession, the Monarchs scored touchdowns on five of their next six drives, including three straight touchdown drives en route to a 34-0, third-quarter lead.
Brandon Bullins recorded a new career-high with 376 yards passing, the most since 2014 when the program's passing record was set.
Keyshaun Pete had three rushing touchdowns and 89 yards on 17 carries.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Greensboro, 48-14
Records: Methodist 1-0, Greensboro 0-1
Location: Pride Field; Greensboro, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pete's first touchdown came on a one-yard plunge to punctuate an eight-play, 68-yard drive in the first quarter. On 4th-and-1, Bullins found AJ Cooper for a 15-yard touchdown to improve the Methodist lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter.
- Pete's six-yard touchdown rush gave the Monarchs a 21-0 lead with 6:36 left in the second quarter and a third potential touchdown (a rush from Pete) in the frame was negated due to a Methodist penalty. Pete did eventually get his hat trick with a two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
- Bullins added a pair of passing touchdowns in the third with a 10-yard strike to Kobe Praylow and a 55-yard dart to Jamar Moore. Bullins and Moore have the "scramble drill" to thank for that touchdown as Bullins used his feet to stay alive and get outside of the pocket, finding Moore, who took off another 40 yards for the TD.
- Cale Matthews had touchdown catches of 26- and 31-yards to finally put Greensboro on the scoreboard in the third quarter. Methodist closed out the game with Pete's third touchdown and a fumble recovery for six from Nate Jones.
