Early Runs Hold Up in Win at #12 R-MC

ASHLAND, Va.  Methodist baseball survived a late Randolph-Macon College rally to deal the No.12-ranked Yellow Jackets a 9-7 loss in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

Methodist was leading 8-0 after the top of the sixth but Randolph-Macon cut the deficit to just two runs in the eighth inning. The Yellow Jackets scored a total of seven runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to create intrigue around the final inning.

For the Monarchs, Rob Wilkerson was on fire, batting .800 (4-of-5) for the day, Jordan Cassell added three hits and three RBIs in his four at-bats, and Spencer Nelson added a two-run home run over the left field fence.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Methodist def. Randolph-Macon, 9-7
Records: Methodist 14-14, Randolph-Macon 15-6
Location: Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park; Ashland, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist had scored at least a run in four straight innings to take an 8-0 lead. The Monarchs scored three runs in the top of the sixth after a double from Cassell that scored Wilkerson and a two-RBI homer from Nelson. In the previous inning, Wesley Hall and Jacob Austin recorded the RBIs for a 6-0 lead. Wilkerson and Cassell got credited with the RBIs in the first inning. Cassell also had an RBI-single in the seventh that scored Will Dagenhart.
  • Randolph-Macon got back into the game with a three-run seventh inning. Two straight singles were succeeded by a three-run home run from Matt Nickles. In the eighth, another three hits (two singles and a double) turned into two runs for a 9-7 score.
  • After surrendering a hit in the first batter he faced, Nathan Cockman drew an outfield fly for the third out while a runner was at third base. Cockman quickly retired the side in the ninth inning to preserve the Monarchs' win.
  • Credit to Michael Orlowski as well who entered the game in a very high-leverage situation. He entered in the sixth with the bases loaded and the Yellow Jackets having already scored two runs in the inning. After walking his first batter, he forced a fly out to safely end the inning while Randolph-Macon left three runners stranded.
  • The Monarchs took a combined shutout into the sixth inning before the Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the sixth inning. The combination of William St. Leger (one inning), Champ Wert (two), and Elliot Mann (2.2) had the Monarchs staring at an 8-0 lead. Mann had recorded two quick outs in the sixth inning before two hits and an error gave way to the two runs.
  • Wilkerson, Cassell, and Dagenhart each scored two runs while Austin added two hits. Wilkerson also had two stolen bases.
  • Randolph-Macon used 10 pitchers and Methodist used seven. That must be some type of record, right? Whose job is it to keep track of that sort of thing?
NEXT UP
  • Methodist travels to Cary, N.C. for a three-game matchup against William Peace University in USA South Athletic Conference action, starting with a single game Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m. and a doubleheader Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
  • In the East Division standings of the conference, Methodist sits a game back of William Peace (7-4 USA South) for second place. Since the USA South has reduced its 2021 tournament field to only the top two teams from each division due to ramifications from the COVID-19 pandemic, Saturday and Sunday's games are pivotal.
